1/31- The Last Day of the Brick and Mortar Store!

I have a thing about rituals. When I find something that makes me feel good, you'll find me cramming it into my schedule no matter what. Things like a good strong cup of tea in the morning or watching CBS Sunday Morning and knitting on Sunday. For the past month, since I announced the store would be closing today, I haven't had much time for myself. There hasn't been time for watching TV, yoga, reading, cooking, and truth be told, I haven't slept much in 4 weeks. The one thing I have done though, unbeknownst to anyone, is play Travis Tritt's "It's a Great Day to Be Alive" in my car on my drive to the store everyday. I know it's goofy...even a little hillbilly, but what the heck, it's true...it's a great day to be alive.

I won't blather on about how starting Bobbin's Nest Studio has been one of the highlights of my life. I won't pontificate about how many lives Bobbin's Nest has touched. I won't take credit for teaching people to knit, sew, crochet, or embroider. What I will say is this...Thank You.

Thank you to my staff, current and not, for teaching me so much about myself and for being there with me through the many trials and tribulations of business. It's been a wild ride and I come away from this wiser because of you.

Thank you to my customers, for caring about the store, the staff, and myself. You pushed me to be savvy, creative, and a tad daring in business and in life. I am so proud of all of the things we have tried and learned together!

Again, thanks for joining us in this awesome journey. The brick and mortar store experience has been so rewarding in so many ways. I am looking forward to staying in touch with all of you.

After January 31, 2012, brick and mortar gift cards cannot be used in our online store. We are unable to convert them into online gift cards. You can, however, apply them towards an order taken over the phone, including shipping charges you will likely incur. It's better to spend them in the store today and get a great deal!

Honorary Bobbin Memberships: As of December 31, 2011 we have closed our Honorary Bobbin program to new members. As you can imagine we have been pretty busy in the Nest this week, so I apologize that I haven't had a chance to post the information about the sewing machines we will be putting out tomorrow.

We have 2 machines for sale, here are the details:
~$150 Each
Janome 625E Sewist, purchased from Ray's Sewing Center in 2007 and maintained yearly there
All of the parts are included in their own little boxes, including a pair of shears a few extra bits
Neither comes with a case
Both are due for a tune-up

We will put them out for sale at 11am tomorrow (Tuesday, 1/10) and no, we won't let you in early. Sorry, we don't want you to duke it out over these, but we want to give everyone a fair chance. I will admit that I have responded to about 30 emails regarding these, so they will go fast.

A Note from Erin

Dear Bobbin's Nest Studio Friends,

This is a difficult email to write because throughout this holiday season, I have labored over how and when to tell you. You mean more to me than you will ever know. I am so incredibly proud of how my beautiful shop developed over the past 4 ½ years. To my amazing staff I am profoundly grateful. I am so thankful for all of you, our dear customers, who I have watched blossom into incredible crafters. I am a better entrepreneur, business owner, and person because of you.

I have decided to close the brick and mortar store and immerse myself in the online business. We will start the closing process as soon as we finish our physical inventory. From January 10th-31st we will be selling off all of the products that we won't be carrying in the online store, at a discount. As of February 1, 2012 the brick and mortar store will no longer be open to the public and the current space will only operate as a pick-up location for for our local customers.

Before you start speculating, let me explain the decision. With this said, I hope you understand and respect that I will not go into all of the gory details of my decision any further than this. 2011 was a very difficult business year for Bobbin’s Nest...incredible increases in our wholesale prices, long waiting times for products due to fiber shortages, increases in our monthly overhead, and a downturn in the Bobbin’s Nest customer base economy were all contributing factors. We tried a lot of new things (Selling bicycle bags as knitting bags? I still stick by that one, even though my staff thought I had lost my mind) and launched the online store. I know a lot of you are struggling too, so I am sure you can sympathize with how stressful it has been. Times are tough for all of us, and especially independently-owned businesses. We saw less customers overall, many of our regulars disappeared, a lot of class cancellations due to low enrollment or customers canceling, and we can’t afford to always have a sale. In order to stay in business the only logical thing to do is broaden our horizons with the online store. It will cut down on our overhead and the Bobbin’s Nest Studio you have come to know and love will continue to exist.

Know that my decision to close the shop was not made in haste. I have had to evaluate, reevaluate, and then reevaluate my reevaluations. It’s been a year of inner dialogue and heavy decisions, all while trying to keep a smile on my face, a positive attitude, and my typical upbeat stance.

Think of it this way...now you’ll know a face behind an online business. And to put it in perspective...she’ll know you too. I appreciate that you support small businesses like Bobbin’s Nest Studio and hope you continue to do so in the future. According to the 3/50 Project (which we joined over 2 years ago) “For every $100 you spend at a locally owned independent store, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend at a national chain, only $43 stays here.” They go on to say that “if you spend online nothing comes home,” but in our case that is incorrect. If you buy online from Bobbin’s Nest Studio, you will keep some of the Bobbin’s Nest staffers you have grown to love, employed. We will continue to invest in uniquely independent businesses (such as Hazel Knits and Jordana Paige, just to name a couple). You will also grant me the opportunity to seek out those diamonds-in-the-rough niche businesses, and I will bring them to your attention. Most importantly, you will help us grow Bobbin’s Nest Studio beyond a little store in Santa Clara, CA.

If you have valued us through these 4 ½ years whether it’s been through: our excellent customer service; our unique products; our promotions (like the Honorary Bobbin membership program, Wine and Cheese Nights, the Stashbusting Sale, or our “Stash and Dash” Deals, etc.); our Blog; the Facebook and Twitter feeds; or our incredible knowledge, I hope you will continue to support us. The online store will grow. The Blog will become even more informative. And we will continue to evolve with the help of technology, just as we have throughout the years.

Who doesn't love a free knitting pattern? I love it when the yarn companies we work with put out free patterns because it makes our job just a little easier. It like getting a prize in the bottom of the cereal box!

First there's the new line we are carrying... Fibre Co. We now carry their Acadia, Terra, and Canopy Fingering yarns. They have a lovely selection of free patterns to go with all of their yarns. I especially like the "Springtime Bandit" in Terra.

It's another interesting WestKnits design and we have the yarn for you! We just got in EVERY color (17 in all) of Acadia. It's so gorgeous! Groove, the scarf/shawl, takes 4 skeins total (2 skeins each of 2 different colors). It's available in the store today and should be in the online store by next week...photographing all this loveliness could take a while because I can't help marveling over every color's depth and the softness of the fiber combination 60% merino wool, 20% baby alpaca, and 20% silk. Just in time for the holidays we are so excited to offer Alchemy Yarns of Transformation's Sanctuary and Silken Straw both in the shop and online! They are both wonderful apart or together in The Magician's Scarf pattern (which we also offer). Sanctuary is 70% wool and 30% silk and is just yummy. I have to say Sanctuary's combination of fibers is probably my favorite combination. The silk provides a beautiful sheen next to the coziness of the wool. Silken Straw is 100% silk and it might feel surprisingly rough for silk in the skein, but when it is washed it blooms and softens into a fabulous drape.

Remember when we chatted about cashmere a couple days ago? I went trolling through the Ravelry pattern arsenal and I came across the Infinitude Scarf by my friend Jeni Chase. I had totally forgotten about it! This free pattern will be perfect for our Jade Sapphire Mongolian Cashmere 4-Ply! How cushy will that feel? I also looked to see what others knit it out of and there were several out of Liberty Wool in solids or prints. Yum-O! Deeelish!

You may have to play with the gauge and needle size a little, but what an easy knit and so versatile....hmmm...I may have to cast it on now!

And Now a Word About Cashmere...

Head to your favorite clothing retailer’s online store and take a peek at the sweaters they offer. Specifically, look at the names some copywriter in New York or L.A. gave these sweaters; titles like “Sunset Sails Cardigan” or “Autumn Equinox Turtleneck.” Chances are, the names you see will be unrelated to the fiber content of that cardigan or pullover you’ve been eyeing—unless that cardigan or pullover is made of cashmere. Cashmere is the epitome of luxury fibers, so downy soft that its mere presence in a piece of clothing or skein of yarn is a substantial selling point. It’s hard not to touch a skein of yarn that says “cashmere” on the label, and even harder to put it down and walk away.

Cashmere has been used in garments for more than a millennium, and the cashmere industry began as early as the 15th century with the wool’s production for use in Persian weaving. Western European colonists learned to appreciate the wool in later centuries, and eventually began weaving the fashionable and comfortable Middle Eastern and Asian shawls in—where else?—Paris. Given cashmere’s lengthy record, it makes sense that such an ancient fiber comes from a species whose history is equally long: the humble goat. While sheep’s wool such as merino or blue-faced leicester comes from a very specific variety of sheep, any breed of goat that has a winter undercoat (the soft down which grows underneath the coarse outer coat) produces cashmere.

The Jade Sapphire's 4-Ply Mongolian Cashmere comes from the Inner Mongolia Cashmere Goat; the cashmere present in other blends may originate with a variety of goat grazing in Australia or in a Chinese province. Unfortunately for fiber enthusiasts everywhere, the common goat’s ability to grow cashmere does not translate into a near infinite volume of cashmere yarn. Since goats only grow their soft, coveted undercoats for added insulation in the winter, cashmere production is limited: the average goat produces only a third of a pound of cashmere per year.

Although the yarn industry has no shortage of cashmere, the average goat’s limited production abilities mean that the luxurious feel of cashmere fiber is clearly reflected in its price. Fortunately, 100% cashmere yarn isn’t always necessary; a yarn containing a smaller amount of cashmere is entirely capable of creating a soft, silky, and equally desirable product. Shalimar Yarn's Breathless, at 15% cashmere, or sweetgeorgia's Cashluxe Fine at 20%, could easily knit into a scarf or shawl that would rival the beauty and texture of a 100% cashmere item, and would be much kinder to your budget.

While there may be less cashmere in the world than knitters would prefer, there’s no need for serious concerns about being deprived of the luxurious texture cashmere could contribute to your next project.

Remember last year when I went on a bit of a rant about supporting small businesses during the holiday season? Yeah, well, get ready for part 2. The 3/50 Project has announced their "Keep the Cheer Here" Campaign and we're jumping on the bandwagon...again! AND they have an iPhone app called "Look Local" so you too can find independent businesses in YOUR area too!

Oh Target, how you have disappointed me so by choosing to open at midnight on Black Friday. Really? I feel for your poor employees. That stinks. Best Buy, I lashed out you last year, and this year you have sunk even further when you chose to also open at midnight. Clearly, your employees aren't happy and frankly, I have to agree with them.

At the Nest, we take a different approach to the craziness of Black Friday. We will be celebrating Thanksgiving with our families and will be closed on Black Friday. But, don't think that we have forgotten to give thanks to you, our loyal customers, we are having our traditional "Thankful For You" sale Saturday, Nov. 19th through Wednesday, Nov. 23rd both in the store and online!

So, how do you like them apples? We disagree with the implication that ...retailers say they're simply responding to consumers' desires. I feel that's a cop out and that chain stores have gotten greedy. I think they need to look at the big picture. Once upon a time, the holidays were about taking a few days off to spend time with your family, enjoy your life, and celebrate your faith. Big box stores, you need to consider how you treat your employees. I am a boss who respects my employees and over the years I have worked many occasions so my staff could be home, spending time with their kids. Every Mother's Day you have seen me in the store so my staff who have children can enjoy the day with them. Birthdays are a big deal at the Nest and my staff members get a paid day off and an entire birthday weekend off. In the past, I have closed down to accommodate holiday travels. I value my employees and know that they are the ones who (wo)man the fort when I am not there. It's high time that big box stores go back to some of those "family values" they are always marketing to us.

Please shop with us, with them, on Etsy, your favorite artist's website, and your local art museum this holiday season.

While this photo may speak for itself, you absolutely must come in and feel this fabric. All quilting cottons are not created equal, and Michael Miller has pretty much outdone themselves on this line. This fabric is soft and drapey, leaning towards a voile or a lawn without the least bit of stiffness. These prints are all from the Tea Time colorway and they are simply spectacular.

Sandi Henderson says this is her favorite of all her fabric lines, and it's easy to see why. From the florals to the geometrics, from the large medallions to the ornate keys, this line of fabrics really shines. And the colors are just spot on.

It's hard for me to imagine these bolts lasting for long, so stop by soon to pick up some for yourself! Once our online store is live (hopefully later today!), I'm sure these will be snapped up in a jiffy!

So, to be honest, this picture was actually taken about 2 years ago and has been seriously photoshopped.

As I move through final tweaks of the Bobbin's Nest online store (launching next Tuesday, November 1st) I thought you might enjoy a little preview! Many folks have asked about what we are going to offer in the online store. Will we have everything online that we carry in the physical store? Initially, the online store will include what I like to refer to as "The Best of the Nest."

-Yarn?- Check.

- Fabric?- Absolutely! 331 bolts...in case you were wondering.

-Sewing Patterns?- Yep! Got those too!

-Needles? Hooks?- Our entire ChiaoGoo needle/ hook inventory will be available online! Ask and you shall receive...thanks Knitmore Girls Podcast for touting the loveliness and affordability of ChiaoGoo! We *heart* them too!

The Mystery of Blue-Faced Leicester...Unwound

Pick up a skein of yarn and check the label for fiber content, and there’s a good chance that
yarn will contain some percentage of wool—likely Merino, a particularly fine variety of sheep’s
wool. Merino is one of the most popular types of wool for use in yarn and garments, but recently
something different appeared among the yarn offerings at Bobbin’s Nest Studio: Indigo Moon’s
100% Blue-faced Leicester (pronounced "Lester") wool. Nothing against soft and lovely Merino, but if the recent rainy weather has you itching to start a cozy new project using something a bit more exotic than your trusty standby wool, Blue-faced Leicester (or BFL as it is commonly referred to) may be the yarn for you.

That hefty name—Blue-faced Leicester—indicates the breed of sheep from which this wool
is spun. The Blue-faced Leicester is a specific variety of Leicester sheep, haling from
Northumberland (in Northeast England). Originating during the early twentieth century,
Blue-faced Leicesters are primarily used for crossbreeding purposes, and it’s not difficult to
understand why. According to the Leicester Longwool Sheep Breeder’s Association, Leicesters
are an exceptionally large, adaptable, and hardy breed, and Blue-faced Leicesters are outstanding for crossbreeding, even among other varieties of Leicester.

Unfortunately, their usefulness as sires in breeding lambs is not exactly a nod to their beauty; Leicesters are at best an awkwardly charming animal, with an expression that seems to say, “Really? You’re wearing that?” The beauty of the Blue-faced Leicester’s fleece more than makes up for whatever it may lack in good looks, however, and the wool (and whatever you choose to make with it) is guaranteed to be more attractive than the sheep itself.

Blue-faced Leicesters are a long wool variety, meaning they produce long-stapled wool (3-6” staple length) with a wide fiber diameter (in contrast to Merino varieties, which are fine wool sheep producing wool with narrow fiber diameters). Although long wool fleece seems to appear less often in luxury sweaters, it’s popular with hand spinners, so the beautiful skeins produced by artisan companies like Indigo Moon should come as no surprise. The wool you’ll see coming from Blue-faced Leicesters equals Merino wools in softness, but also has an intriguing luster and, when knit, an elegant drape.

Combined with the rich, nature-inspired hues of the Indigo Moon 100% BFL, this unique wool choice has no trouble inspiring the urge to knit up a brand new scarf to use the next time winter weather rolls around.

As Kate was writing this blog post, I received an email from Trish at Indigo Moon touting the wonder that is BFL. I thought I should share it with you...

If you haven’t tried the new Blue-faced Leicester yet ….here’s another reason…well actually two…why you should.
As you already know, the BFL is awesome for shawls – the drape is the best I’ve seen (without silk), the colours just pop and the yarn isn’t as sprongy as Merino so it’s stays more where it’s blocked. But do you know how great it is for socks?
I’ve focussed on the greatness of BFL for shawls, scarves etc …and forgot about socks! How could I do that!??!
For those of you that don’t want nylon in your yarn – or prefer a yarn that you may or may not use for socks – then the BFL is a great choice. It is 430 yds per 100gm – so there’s plenty of yarn for pretty much any pair of socks. BFL is naturally strong – so the nylon really isn’t needed for strength – in fact my suppliers claim that BFL with or without nylon should last the same amount of time. And BFL is less stretchy than the Merino so they will retain their shape better (if you are really concerned about the socks not getting larger with wear, just go down a part needle size). And the dyes come out so beautifully on the BFL – more shimmer, less matte.
And …it’s superwash! so if you really must put the socks in the washer and/or dryer (on gentle and low heat) you can!

Meet Our Newest Bobbin!

After four years of being able to browse all the amazing artisan yarns and whimsical fabrics at Bobbin’s Nest Studio in person, it’s pretty exciting that in less than a month the Nest’s outstanding selection of products will be available online, too. However, with all the no-longer-top-secret happenings going on at the Nest recently, things have been pretty busy— after all, it’s not easy keeping track of a shop, website, online business…the list goes on. That’s where I come in: my name is Kate, and I’ll be helping Erin and the crew at the Nest with the blog.

I’m a recent college grad, aspiring writer, and avid knitter. I’ll admit, I don’t really sew very often, but I love contemplating fabrics and sewing projects almost as much as yarn, and I have a great deal of experience letting my mother know what she should sew for me. I’m looking forward to letting you know more about some of the new (and old!) products available at the Nest, possible projects to add to your to-do list, and anything else that comes up! When I’m not at the Nest (either working or finding new projects!) and writing blogs for your viewing pleasure, I seem to spend an awful lot of time shopping at Anthropologie, doing crafty projects (knitting and otherwise), sitting on planes to Southern California, and trying to satisfy my cat Charlie’s insatiable need for attention.

Join Dolin as she walks you through the tips and tricks to sewing up a squishy soft bath mat or a warm and cozy baby blanket using this faux chenille technique.

The project is based on a free tutorial from the internet. If you purchase your fabric for this project from Bobbin's Nest Studio, you are invited to attend our complimentary Sunday afternoon Chenille Bath Mat/Blanket Sew Along help sessions!

These sessions will be on the following days:

This project requires a single cut of quilting cotton for the front, and three layered flannels for the back. You can make it whatever size you like, but making the blanket 36-42" square will keep you from needing to do any piecing at all!

You'll also make quick work of this project if you get one of our handy-dandy chenille cutters, but it's possible, though slower, to use good scissors as well.

We've gotten in some great flannels lately and we'll be happy to help you pick just the right coordinating fabrics.

Come on by and we'll get you all set up to sew. This project will really only take you about two of sew along days to complete!

Hip Baby Quilt Pattern Review by Amy

Do you remember late in July when I posted on Facebook that I had picked out these fabrics and pattern to make a quilt?

It's finally finished!!

I chose a selection of great pink/purple, green, and blue/green fabrics that all coordinated with that sweet little candy stripe. The overall effect is definitely appropriate for a baby quilt, but doesn't scream baby in the way that a bunch of light pinks and purples or tons of baby blue would.

This is a great pattern for a beginning quilter, because it allows you to try out five different types of blocks within the same pattern, yet all the pieces are squares and rectangles. One of the blocks is just a 6.5" square -- no piecing required!

I recommend spending a little time organizing what you need before you begin cutting. The pattern lists what you need to cut for block 1, then for block 2, etc., but I found it easier to write down the sizes of all the pieces, figure out how to most efficiently cut those, and then to start cutting. With careful planning, you can get all the pieces for the blocks out of one 6.5" strip that is the width of the fabric!

And because the pattern called for 3/8 of a yard of each of the nine different fabrics, and because I opted not to make the border, I had enough fabric left over to piece the backing AND to make a pieced binding for this quilt, all from that original 3/8 yard of each fabric.

In short, I think this is a fun and fairly quick quilt to put together -- once I really got started on it, it took me no time at all! And with only nine fabrics to choose, you'll have this one ready to go in a jiffy. Stop by the shop and let us help you pick out fabrics for your own personal version of the Hip Baby Quilt. "Bust That Stash" Sale This Weekend!

Sidewalk Stashbusting Sale!

This Weekend, September 2-4

At last night's count, over 35 people have handed over their goods to us, so that we may de-stash for them. You would not believe what's going to be out for sale this weekend! Here's just a snippet:

- At least 20 complete quilt kits
- Bags of yarn prepped and ready for sweaters, baby blankets, and other large projects!
- Lots of great yarn and fabric packaged up and ready to incorporate with your existing stash.

You really will be shocked at what we have in store for you this weekend! Make sure you stop by:
-Friday, 11-4
-Saturday, 11-4
-Sunday, 11-4

The final time for dropping off your stash is 6pm on tonight! We will not except anything else after this time...as it is, we are running out of room and are not quite sure how we're going to display everything.

Here's how it works for those who would like to bring their goodies in:

1. Package similar yarns or fabrics in ziplock bags.

2. Put a price on your bags (think yard sale, about 1/2 of the original price). You do not need your name on every item. We will add an individual barcode to track your items.

3. Put all your items in a bag or a box with your name on it

4. Bring it into the shop by Wednesday, August 31st.

5. Once the sale is over, we'll tally everything up and issue you store credit for whatever sold. We'll put the credit on store gift cards and have them ready for you by Tuesday, September 6th.

6. Items that have not sold WILL NOT be returned. We will donate them to local charities or use them for our upcoming charitable crafting events.

7. We will not be writing any receipts suitable for tax write-offs. It's just too much to figure out. Plus, we're nice just for de-stashing for you!

*We will not accept: half-completed projects, books, patterns, needles, notions, bags, or completed projects. Fabric and yarn only please, but there is no yardage requirement. In other words, use your best judgment and think "what would Martha Stewart have at her tag sale?"

Want to come to the sale? Here's how it works for you:

1. Come in starting Friday, at 11am for the best stuff! We can't wait to see you!

2. We will have the least expensive stuff displayed outside the front in a traditional "Sidewalk Sale" way. The most expensive things and kits will be inside our Sewing Salon! Come and get it!

3. We will NOT be winding yarn this weekend!

4. ABSOLUTELY NO RETURNS OR EXCHANGES ON STASHBUSTING SALE OR GRAB BAGS! YOU BUY IT AND IT'S YOURS! (Good, bad, and otherwise).

5. If you are an Honorary Bobbin, you will NOT get your 10% off of any the "Bust That Stash" sale items. If you buy any of our regularly-priced items this weekend, you will get your discount on those!

6. Finally, you'll see a bit of our own stash out there as well. Great deals can be had on yarns and fabrics that we are closing out.

Stashbusting Sidewalk Sale- September 2-4

Already we have received several stash drop-offs and man-o-man, you are NOT going to want to miss out! There are brand new yarns in sweater quantities and beyond! Someone dropped off perfectly coordinated groups of fabric that with an added backing and batting you would have enough for a quilt! It's crazy!

As I was going through adding the personalized Bobbin's Nest skus to the bags I thought about a few things that might help if you plan in participating:

1. This is YOUR sale. We're doing the dirty work for you. We'll sit outside and keep an eye on your stuff, so it's like a yard sale, but not in your own yard!

2. Make your goodies more attractive! You want your stuff to sell-right? Make sure you use clean, clear, ziplock bags when packaging your items. And the more information the better....do you know how much yardage is there? Do you know what the retail price is? Put a little tag in the inside that shows through and really makes your items pop!

3. Truly put a price on there of what you would like to realistically get for it. Some of the stuff that has arrived so far is at bargain basement prices. Even I was considering shopping because I know how much you paid and you're selling it WAY TOO LOW!

4. Have fun with it! This is your chance to clean that closet, craft room, and make room for new projects! Be ruthless! You won't believe how good you'll feel when everything is tidy and there is room to grow.

5. Regardless of what happens to your items, whether they sell or they get donated, you are doing a great thing and we love you for it!

Get ready for Fall crafting by thinning out your stash and making room for new projects! Do you have left over bits and bobs you don't know what to do with? Have you inherited stash, given up on projects, or been given gifts that weren't quite your color? Let us help you de-stash and you'll earn store credit to put towards new projects!

Here's how it works:

Looking Hot in Denver

So, you know how you leave the house thinking, "geez, I sure hope I don't run into anyone today because man! I look like a schlump." Yep. That's exactly the day you run into someone important. For me it's always an ex-boyfriend, an old co-worker, or in this case a fellow business person who blog stalks you and wants to take your picture.

I was in Denver over the weekend visiting a childhood friend. I came <--this close--> to canceling my trip because I have been super sick, but having worked a lot in the past 3 months I thought, "how bad could it be?" Head cold+flying+altitude sickness=not a good plan. However, Sunday after lying on my friend's couch eating popsicles for 3 days, I had a "suck it up soldier" moment when my friend and I ventured into Fabric Bliss, to get rations...ahem, I mean supplies...for her Christmas projects (yeah, she has a gift drawer. Right? I know. The girl's got too much time on her hands). So, turns out that Fabric Bliss is only 4 months old, but looks very established and polished. They are a fabric and yarn shop and I felt like I was "coming home" so to speak because the feel is...well, the best I can come up with is, "very Bobbin's Nest." It's a beautiful store with wonderful products, great people, and a lovely atmosphere.

As a store owner, when I go into other shops, I feel out the situation before I say anything about Bobbin's Nest. It's a fine line with some store owners, so I try to be as respectful as possible. That said, I immediately felt comfortable with Simon who was working behind the counter. We chatted for a few minutes and when I said, "well, actually I own Bobbin's Nest Studio in California" I expected a nod and a "that's nice", because heck, I am in Denver, nobody knows me there! Aurora, Simon's wife, and the store's lovely co-owner came flying out of their sewing salon. "Did you just say you are from Bobbin's Nest? I blog stalk you!" Guffaw of laughter all around ensued!

Of course, this is perfect day for me to drop my name. I look like I've been hit by a truck. And Aurora, consider me your new stalker. Your store is wonderful, however next time I will be dressed and ready for my close-up .

Didn't she do a spectacular job?! She used one of our favorite Robert Kaufman Metro Living prints on the outside and combined it with the Henna Garden print in raspberry from Sandi Henderson on the inside. We love the combination of the green and the pink!

You may have seen this beautiful sample hanging in our shop. This project is a great way to get started sewing Amy Butler's great bags. Amy Butler's patterns are known for producing high-quality, professional-looking bags. They are also known for having loads of pieces, multiple types of interfacing, and features like zipper pockets, magnetic snaps, and piping. We can help!

Exterior with cell phone pocket!

This particular pattern eases you into the world of Amy Butler's bags by including some of the best features of her bags, but in a new-to-bag-sewing kind of way. In addition, this pattern gives you multiple options: you can make the handbag (which is what we made) or a larger tote, use a second coordinating fabric for the exterior pockets, or make one or two interior pockets (or none) that can either have zippers or not!

We have everything you need for this Sew Along at the shop, including the pattern, loads of great fabrics, and all the notions required!

Lots of us are having a great time knitting the beautiful Liesl sweater by Ysolda Teague.

This is a great pattern -- it's top-down, which means it's easier to fit, and the lace pattern is really simple. There are several length options for the sweater and the sleeves, so you can make exactly the version you want! And Charlotte even skipped the buttonholes on the version shown here because there is plenty of space in the lace pattern to put your button through.

Amy, our staffer who has never knit a sweater, has decided that this is going to be her first sweater project -- you could make it your first sweater project too!

We have everything you need for this Knit Along at the shop!

This sweater is relatively quick to knit, so you still have time to get started and join us for some fun knitting in the coolness of our lovely air-conditioned shop, this Sunday, July 3!

Project of the Week - Chenille Baby Blanket!

About a month ago a customer came in and shared this adorable chenille baby blanket project with us that she was interested in making. Dolin and Amy were completely smitten with the project, and Dolin immediately cut up some fabric to make one for the Bobbin's Nest.

The blanket is done and it turned out super cute!

The instructions were easy to follow and the whole process is fairly simple, but all the stitching and cutting is time consuming. Don't get us wrong this is a fun project, but not something you can whip out in a couple of hours.

The blanket is about 45" square, but is super flexible on size (we want to make a small one for a bath mat). If you keep to the width of the fabric on the bolts, you don't even have to do any piecing! You need just 1 1/4 yds each of one fabric for the front and 3 flannels to make the chenille, plus about 1/2 yd of fabric to make the binding -- or you can buy some of our pre-made bias binding, which would make rounded corners a snap!

Just layer all 4 fabrics on top of one another, sew diagonal parallel lines to hold the whole thing together, (you can use your machine foot as a spacing guide*), thent cut the layers of flannel between the stitching, bind, and wash. Instant chenille!

Stop by the shop and we'll help you pick out some great fabrics for this adorable chenille baby blanket project!

* We didn't want to have to buy the special chenille cutter so we just used regular scissors. If you go this route don't use your sewing machine foot as a guide, you will never be able to get your scissors in between your stitch lines to cut the flannel. Aim to place your stitching about 5/8"-3/4" apart. We just eyed the spacing of the stitching. On the shop blanket the spacing of the stitching isn't particularly even or straight, but you don't even notice it once the blanket is done!

Despite the wet, chilly weather, summer is just around the corner! For knitters, there's no better way to celebrate the season of BBQs and beach trips than Knit in Public Day. This year, we'll be hosting an informal KIP event Sunday, June 12 which also coincides with the first day of our Liesl Sweater Knit Along!

Some Knitting in Public hints from Charlotte (who usually does her KIP-ing at softball tournaments and coffee houses):

1. Bring a project that doesn't demand your full attention. Too often, I've knit complicated mistakes into difficult lace projects while laughing at a friend's story!

2. Better yet, bring multiple projects. At a recent event, I finished the cuff of a sock, knit a few inches of stockinette on a sweater, and seamed the underarms on a third project.

3. Remember your tools! Will you need a tapestry needle, stitch markers, or row counter? What about a crochet hook to fix those dropped stitches? Of course, we have replacements here for you if you do forget.

4. Bring a friend-- or come prepared to make new friends! The community that emerges when knitters find each other is inspiring, encouraging, and fun.

We've just gotten in a HUGE shipment of Berrooco yarns, so choose from the Berroco Vintage DK, worsted, or chunky, or even the Berroco Comfort. All are extremely affordable options that will give you an easy to care for sweater when you are done knitting.

We also have lots of other beautiful yarns in the shop that would be great for this pattern, so come by and let us help you pick out your yarn!

We'll show you how to make a simple log cabin quilt block. These blocks can be used for all kinds of cute projects, besides adorable quilts!

This simple elastic-waisted skirt, with two layers of extra-twirly ruffles along the bottom, whips up in a flash, and -- even better -- we're going to show you how to do it!

Pick up the fabric you'll need, some elastic, and our darling pre-made ruffles, along with our set of written instructions, and once you get home you'll have this skirt sewn up in no time!

Have you seen cute projects made with elastic thread, but didn't how to use it? It turns out that it's not that hard, and we're going to show you how!

This technique is great for children's clothes, as well as summery dresses and tops for adults.

Life Lines are a Real Life Saver! -- A Tip from Amy

Everyone knows that Charlotte is the expert lace knitter at Bobbin's Nest, but I thought some of you who are afraid to try lace knitting or who have had a bad run-in with lace and never tried again, might like a tip from me (a beginner lace knitter if there ever was one!) that has really made my lace knitting a much less hair-pulling kind of experience.

It's called a life line.

A life line is a piece of contrasting waste or scrap yarn that you thread through one entire row of stitches at the end of the repeat in your lace pattern, before starting the next repeat of the pattern.

That blue and purple variegated yarn is my life line, all ready for me to start the next repeat.

If you make a mistake in the next repeat of the pattern, all you have to do is take out the needles and rip out the yarn. The yarn will automatically stop ripping out when it gets to the life line. It's like magic!

Because the life line is there, it's a cinch to put the stitches back on the needle and get back to work.

I'm currently working on a great lace pattern from Churchmouse Yarns -- the English Mesh Lace Scarf. At the end of every repeat of the 8-row pattern I move my lifeline. This has already saved me on several occasions. The most I ever have to rip out is 8 rows and I'm back to good as new!!

Here I've just finished a repeat and I'm ready to move my life line to the stitches that are on the needle.

Modern Log Cabin Quilting - Drawstring Bag

It's time for Modern Log Cabin Quilting project number 5 - an adorable drawstring bag!

Gail opted to use the many of the same fabrics for this project that Dolin used for the adorable pin cushion -- Sew Happy by Monaluna from Robert Kaufman, combined with the scissor fabric from Momo's Wonderland by Moda.

This project is made of a single log cabin block, folded in half and lined. Make a casing, and, voila!, you have a drawstring bag!

Gail, who is not herself a quilter, says this project is a great intro to the world of quilting. "The log cabin pattern is straight forward and can be made in an evening. Cute fabrics become a cute bag. The drawstring camouflages a not-so-perfect log cabin square."
